JOHOR BARU: A 28-year-old delivery rider has lost RM63,826 after falling victim to an online love scam.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the victim befriended a woman known as “Leong Kin Seng” through a social media platform in early August last year.
After the pair had communicated for some 20 days, the woman asked the victim for money, claiming that she needed to treat her ailing mother – failing which, she would end their relationship.
“Fooled by her pleas, the victim transferred the money to her in 16 transactions between Aug 25 and Nov 16,” he said in a statement yesterday.
ACP Raub said the woman gave excuses to avoid seeing the victim when he asked to meet her.
Suspecting something was amiss, the victim conducted an online search using the woman’s profile photo and discovered that the person in the picture was a well-known Hong Kong actress.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
“Always check the person’s phone numbers and bank account details via the Semak Mule mobile application,” urged ACP Raub.
“Suspicious activities should be reported to the National Scam Response Centre via its hotline at 997. The public can follow the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s social media to keep track of scam tactics.”In a separate case, ACP Raub said five teenagers, aged between 16 and 19, had been arrested for performing dangerous stunts on the road.
The group was picked up during a special operation on illegal racing and road bullies yesterday.
“Five motorcycles were seized under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“Eight summonses were also issued for various offences including driving without a licence and unauthorised vehicle modifications,” he said.
ACP Raub appealed to the public to help combat illegal racing and road bullies, saying that relevant information can be reported to the Johor Baru South district police headquarters at 07-218 2222.
