Tourism Ministry urged to generate income, says PM Anwar

SEPANG: The Tourism Ministry should focus on generating revenue and attracting more tourists to the country, not on requesting additional allocations, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, speaking at the launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026), playfully advised Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing not to ask for more funds.

"The four themes under VM2026 are eco-tourism and sustainability, modern attractions and innovations, cultural heritage and diversity, and the strength of our collaborations and partnerships.

The campaign should proceed with roadshows and festivals at minimal cost," he said.

"Tourism Minister, I must remind him. Every time he sees me, he asks for money. I said your role is to get more money, not to ask for more money,” added Anwar.

He then said as a joke that the Tourism Minister’s role is to bring foreigners to Malaysia.

We have a Minister of Tourism who's now travelling a bit too much. Joking, joking, don't take it too seriously," at the event held at Hangar 6, MAB Engineering Complex, on Thursday (Oct 18).

During the tabling of Budget 2025 on Oct 18 last year, Anwar said that nearly RM550mil has been allocated to enhance tourism promotion and activities during VM2026.

This allocation includes funding for cultural activities, tourism events, improving flight access to Malaysia, and the economic empowerment of communities through the arts, including promoting handicrafts and batik.

He also said that RM110mil has been allocated to enhance tourism areas, establish eco-tourism partnerships, and support Unesco nominations.
