Undocumented women held for selling smuggled booze near Tawau


KOTA KINABALU: Authorities have detained three foreign women for allegedly selling alcohol with unpaid duties in Kalabakan about two hours from Tawau.

The three sundry shop workers in the Brantian area were nabbed during a crackdown led by the General Operations Force (GOF) dubbed Ops Kotraban on Sunday (Jan 5).

Tawau GOF commanding officer Supt Anselinus Marcus said they held the operation following information from the public.

“Apart from the three women, we also seized alcohol worth around RM12,000,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that the women do not possess any legal documents and no permit to sell the seized booze.

Supt Anselinus said the GOF will continue to conduct operations to curb illegal activities including sales of contrabands and smuggling.

These also include the sales of diesel, crude palm oil, and frozen meat without proper halal certificates and no permit from the veterinary department, he said.

He said their last big bust was on Sept 19 last year where unlicensed crude palm oil and three tankers with a total value of RM1.3mil were seized in Kg Beruang, along the Merotai-Tawau road.
