PETALING JAYA: The success of the VM2026 campaign hinges on strong collaboration between the government, the private sector and the Malaysian public, say tourism players.
Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president Nigel Wong said the campaign is a national endeavour which requires collective effort.
“Malaysians must treat this as a national challenge for it to truly succeed,” he said.
Wong pointed out the importance of seamless coordination between key ministries, including Transport, Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Home Affairs, to ensure smooth entry experiences at airports and other entry points.
“Improving air, land and sea transportation infrastructure is crucial. Public facilities, including rail networks, must be safe and accessible,” he added.
Malaysian Tourism Federation (MTF) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang also echoed the need for cross-sector collaboration.
“Many ministries are interconnected in the tourism ecosystem, and the Prime Minister’s call for focus is timely,” he said.
Tan pointed out the roles of the Transport Ministry in enhancing air connectivity, the Education Ministry in promoting cultural exchanges, and the Finance Ministry in providing incentives for tourism players.
He also urged state governments to uncover hidden tourism gems and align strategies under a unified national theme.
Malaysian Association of Hotels president Datin Christina Toh highlighted Malaysia’s readiness to host international business events, supported by world-class convention centres in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Sarawak.
“These events generate significant economic benefits across flights, transportation, accommodation and shopping sectors,” she noted.
Toh said Malaysia remains an affordable destination with high- quality infrastructure and visa exemptions for tourists from China and India, further boosting visitor numbers.
Despite post-Covid-19 challenges, the hospitality industry has adapted, she added.
