MUAR: Two fishermen who went missing during a fishing trip in the waters off Muar have been safely located in Indonesia.

Batu Pahat maritime zone director Maritime Comm Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the boat carrying Asamadi Omar, 55, and Zulkefli Mad, 46, was swept away by currents after the engine failed.

The pair were reported missing around 11am on Monday (Jan 6).

Mohammad Zaini said a search and rescue operation was swiftly initiated to find the fishermen.

"Around 6pm the same day, the fishermen's family members informed the police that both men had been found safe in Indonesian waters," Mohammad Zaini said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 7).

He explained that the fishermen were carried approximately 65km to Bengkalis, Indonesia, by the currents before they were rescued by the locals.

Mohammad Zaini added that both fishermen were unharmed.

He reminded the public in need of assistance or to report of illegal activities to contact the Batu Pahat maritime zone operations centre at 07-434 9343 or call the 999 emergency hotline.
