Quick rescue saves boy carried away by strong current in Putatan

KOTA KINABALU: An 11-year-old boy has a narrow escape after being swept away by strong waves while swimming at Pantai Gorongon in Putatan near here.

The incident occurred at 5pm on Monday evening (Jan 6) when the boy, along with five other children, was swimming in the sea.

Suddenly, he was carried off by the current.

The other beachgoers noticed the boy struggling and rushed to assist him.

Putatan Fire and Rescue Station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said they received an emergency call at 5.14pm.

“The victim and his friends were swimming when he was pulled into deeper waters by the current.

”His friends attempted to grab him but failed. They immediately sought help from the people nearby,” she said.

Four men swam approximately 50m to rescue the boy, who had managed to cling to a floating drum.

They successfully brought him back to shore, where firefighters checked the boy before he was handed over to the police.

The operation ended at 5.43pm.
