Collision in Sarawak kills unborn child, injures expectant mother


SIBU: A collision between a 4WD and a sedan at KM5 of the Opar/Rumih junction on Jalan Bau-Lundu on Tuesday (Jan 7) resulted in the loss of an unborn child while the mother, who was 35 weeks and two days pregnant, suffered internal injuries.

Bau OCPD Dr Daram Ruer said that the fetal death was confirmed by the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“The accident occurred around 5.30pm when a 4WD vehicle, exiting to the right at a junction toward Bau, collided with a sedan driven by the pregnant woman," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 8)

The woman is currently being treated in the hospital's emergency unit.

Dr Daram said the incident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He encouraged witnesses and anyone with pertinent details about the accident to step forward and aid the investigation by contacting the nearest police station.

Dr Daram reminded motorists to exercise caution while driving, especially during unpredictable weather conditions. He also stressed the importance of maintaining vehicles in good condition and practising courteous driving to avoid accidents.
