PUTRAJAYA: Discussions on the repatriation of Palestinian refugees living at Wisma Transit Kuala Lumpur (WTKL) to their home country are ongoing, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister and government spokesman said Cabinet has been informed about the ongoing talks between the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Defence Ministry and the Egyptian government to facilitate the repatriation process.
"This process is still ongoing, and all medical services will continue to be available," he said at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya on Wednesday (Jan 8).
He said that the unity government takes welfare matters involving Palestinians seriously, especially those brought to Malaysia for medical treatment.
"This matter is still under discussion, involving the Foreign and Defence Ministries. So we will allow them to handle it," said Fahmi.
The Malaysian Armed Forces confirmed that an incident involving several refugees at WTKL was resolved without injuries or major damage.
The incident occurred at about 5pm on Saturday when a group of Palestinians wanted their repatriation process expedited.
There was minor damage to furniture on the premises.
This was the second such disturbance after a similar incident in October.
On Aug 16, Malaysia brought 127 Palestinians, including 41 injured by Israel's attacks on Gaza, to the country for medical treatment.
The Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia, Walid Abu Ali, expressed regret over the recent commotion at WTKL, stressing that such actions do not align with Palestinian culture and ethics.
He added that both the Malaysian government and the embassy are fully committed to addressing the issue and supporting those affected.
"The issue is under discussion with the Malaysian authorities. I am truly saddened by what happened. This is not our ethics and goes against our culture. The government of Malaysia and the Palestinian embassy are doing our best to help," he said.
