Eight-vehicle pileup in Melaka leaves one driver injured

MELAKA: An express bus driver was seriously injured, while eight others sustained injuries in an accident involving eight vehicles on the Lebuh Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Alor Gajah (SPA) highway at Ayer Keroh here.

Melaka Fire and Rescue Department's director, Mohd Pisar Aziz, said they received information about the accident at 10.38am on Wed (Jan 8) – the incident involved a total of 15 victims (13 men and two women).

"Upon arrival at the scene, we found that eight vehicles were involved, including an express bus and seven other vehicles: three lorries and two 4WDs.

"The male bus driver sustained serious injuries, while eight others suffered minor injuries," he said when met at the scene.

Mohd Pizar said six individuals escaped unscathed, and all victims were sent to Melaka Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Tarmizi Maan, 33, a tipper truck driver, said the accident occurred while he was stopped at the T-junction.

"I was waiting at the red traffic light when suddenly I heard a loud crash from behind, before realising that a lorry carrying boxes had rammed into my truck.

"A few seconds later, the lorry was hit by several other vehicles," he said.
