Biker dies after neck gets caught in telecoms cable


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A motorcyclist has died after he rode into a collapsed telecommunications cable on Jalan Kulim here on Tuesday (Jan 7).

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief ACP Helmi Aris said the victim, in his 40s, injured his neck and died at the scene.

"Preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred when the a man in his 20s was driving a truck, which had a crane arm attachment, from Kulim to Bukit Mertajam.

"The bar of the crane got stuck in a telecommunications cable which fell on the road," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 8).

He said the victim, who was riding his motorcycle from the opposite direction, was unable to avoid the cable and got his neck caught in it.

Helmi said the victim's body was sent to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for a post-mortem examination, adding that the truck driver was remanded for three days for investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
