Officer remanded in RM13,125 corruption probe

MELAKA: An Islamic Religious Department officer has been remanded in custody for seven days to assist investigators in a RM13,125 corruption case.

The 43-year-old suspect allegedly accepted the sum from a contractor as an inducement to secure service-related work at the department two years ago.

The remand application until Jan 13 was made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) before magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni yesterday.

The suspect had earlier arrived at the Magistrate Court in Ayer Keroh here escorted by MACC officers.

On Monday, authorities arrested him at the state MACC headquarters in Alai.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act.

If convicted, the suspect could face a fine of no less than five times the amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment of up to 20 years.

State MACC director Adi Supian Shafie, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.
