Police confirm man killed in shooting at Johor Baru restaurant


JOHOR BARU: A 40-year-old man was shot and killed at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident occurred at 12pm, and a resident alerted authorities through the MERS 999 emergency hotline.

He added that a video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

"Preliminary investigations identified the victim as a 40-year-old male. The victim was pronounced dead by the medical team from Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI).

"The police are actively investigating to identify those involved, locate witnesses, and determine the exact cause," he said on Wednesday (Jan 8).

ACP Raub said the victim was eating at the restaurant during the incident and police are checking CCTV footage from nearby premises.

When asked about the number of shots fired, ACP Raub added that the matter is still being investigated and the post-mortem report is expected on Thursday (Jan 9).

He also urged the public not to share the video on social media, as it could lead to speculation and misunderstandings.

"Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Johor Baru South IPD hotline at 07-2182323 or approach the nearest police station.

"The Johor Baru South District Police remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates once the inquiry is completed," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, a man was killed while eating with friends at a restaurant on Jalan Setia 3/2, Taman Setia Indah.

It is understood that the victim and his friends were having lunch in front of the restaurant at around 11.30am on Wednesday (January 8) before he was shot.

A workshop worker, who refused to be identified, said he heard three consecutive explosion noises and saw a motorcycle fleeing the scene.

"The next thing we saw was a man lying on the floor in front of the restaurant," he said, adding that he initially thought people were playing with fireworks.

An 11-second video was posted on the Info Berita Semasa Facebook page showing a body covered with a white canvas in front of a restaurant.
