Scammers dial up deception using police hotline

PORT DICKSON: Scammers consistently devise innovative strategies to deceive their potential victims, but their tactics have recently escalated when they used the district police station hotline number here to execute their scam.

Port Dickson police chief Supt Maslan Udin said investigations revealed that the scammers had used the district police’s 017-600 1411 hotline number to call and cheat potential victims.

“We would like to inform the public that our hotline number has been abused by irresponsible parties to scam the public for traffic offences and other cases.

“I wish to state that the hotline number is only used for official reasons and will not be used to call the public,” he said in a statement. He said police viewed the matter seriously and have since launched a probe.

Supt Maslan said the number would also not be used to obtain personal financial information or banking details from the public.

He reminded the public not to reveal personal or financial information to unknown parties.

“Also, do not be scammed by fake calls related to criminal cases, traffic summonses or other offences from the number. The public needs to exercise caution and not allow themselves to be deceived by individuals using threats or psychological pressure,” he said, adding that they should always verify all information with the respective department or agency whenever they receive suspicious calls.

Supt Maslan said the public can also verify suspicious calls by calling the Commercial Crime Investigation Department Scam Response Centre at 997.
