PUTRAJAYA: Discussions are ongoing on the repatriation of Palestinians being housed at Wisma Transit Kuala Lumpur (WTKL), says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said the Cabinet was informed about the discussions and coordination by Wisma Putra and the Defence Ministry with the Egyptian government to facilitate the repatriation of the Palestinians.
“This process is still ongoing. Meanwhile, all medical services provided will continue to be made available,” he told reporters at his post-Cabinet press briefing here yesterday.
The government spokesman said the administration took the welfare of the Palestinians seriously, and this included those who were brought to Malaysia for medical treatment.
“This matter is still being discussed, and it involves the foreign and defence ministries. So we will allow them to handle it,” he added.
On Saturday, the armed forces confirmed that an incident involving several Palestinian refugees at WTKL was resolved without any injuries or major damage.
The incident occurred at about 5pm that day when a group of the foreigners demanded that the processing of their applications to return home was expedited.
There were some minor damages to furniture reported at the premises.
It was the second such disturbance after a similar incident in October.
Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali had expressed his deep regret over the latest commotion, saying such actions did not align with Palestinian culture and ethics.
He assured that both the Malaysian government and the embassy were fully committed to addressing the issue and offering support to those affected.
On Aug 16 last year, Malaysia flew in 127 Palestinians to the country for medical treatment. The group included 41 persons injured as a result of Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
