Suspicious object in George Town not a bomb, confirm police


GEORGE TOWN: Police have confirmed that the suspicious object resembling a bomb found near Karpal Singh Drive in Bandar Sri Pinang is not an explosive.

"After inspection, the object was found to be made of paper, wire, and cement but did not contain any explosive substance," said George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad on Thursday (Jan 9).

He added that police received a report of the suspicious object found by the road at Jalan Lebuh Sungai Pinang 7 at about 9.50am.

A bomb disposal unit, which included a remote-controlled robot, was dispatched immediately to the scene.

"The unit deactivated the object at about 11.50am before it was found not to be an explosive. The area was declared safe and opened to the public at about 12.15pm," he said, adding that there were no property damages or injuries reported in the incident.

ACP Abdul Rozak also advised the public not to speculate or spread false information about the incident, as it could cause unrest.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to launch the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project nearby on Saturday (Jan 11).
