KUCHING: Underprivileged families in the Kuching South Municipal Council (MBKS) area will receive essential household items for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.
Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the items, including food, will be distributed to 500 residents of the KMC Flats, regardless of race.
"Not all the residents are Chinese. This is what we have been doing all this while. When there is a festive season, whether Hari Raya, Gawai, or Chinese New Year, every resident will get the same contribution.
We want them to join in and be part of the festival," he said after receiving the items at MBKS headquarters on Tuesday (Jan 9).
The items were donated by local retail chain Everrise as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Wee also called for similar contributions from other corporate organisations to support families in need.
He said the council would assist in distributing donated items through its community programmes, especially during festive seasons.
"We want to make sure that no one is left behind. Everyone should be able to celebrate during festive seasons," he said.
Wee added that partnering with the private sector helped the council address residents' needs more effectively.
"Such collaborations enable us to create a more compassionate, inclusive, and resilient society. I urge other corporations to work alongside MBKS to make a lasting difference in the lives of those in need," he said.
