Firefighters rescue man from vehicle swept away by strong currents in Kota Marudu river

KOTA KINABALU: A man in Kota Marudu was successfully rescued by firefighters after the vehicle he was driving got carried away by strong currents in a river there on Friday (Jan 10).

No further details were obtained on the victim, who managed to make his way on top of the four-wheel-drive while awaiting rescue and is reported to be in good condition after firefighters used a rope to bring him to safety.

The Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Department initially received a report on the incident at at the Kampung Simpangan river at 5.20pm.

“The vehicle was washed away by the strong currents while trying to cross a concrete road next to the river after the water level rose.

“The victim climbed up to the roof of the vehicle and firefighters crossed the river and rescue the victim using a rope (to guide back to the riverbank).

“The operation ended at 6.08pm,” said the Department spokesman.
