KUALA LUMPUR: The public should not be alarmed despite recent gangland attacks which occurred in Johor and Negri Sembilan, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said the police are not ruling out the possibility there were actual motives behind the attacks and they were not random.
"For now, we are investigating the matter thoroughly to identify the real motive behind the shooting in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Baru on Wednesday (Jan 8) and the attack in Nilai, Negri Sembilan on Thursday (Jan 9) night.
"On top of tracking down the suspects, we are also investigating the backgrounds of the victims to assist the police in uncovering the motive (behind both attacks).
"We are not ruling out the possibility that the victims were targeted by certain criminal gangs, who wanted to exact revenge with certain activities," he said when contacted on Friday (Jan 10).
The police are also taking into account the involvement of criminal gangs or organised crime outfits, the IGP said.
"Be it as it may, our focus is on tracking down those involved in any offence committed," he added.
Razarudin said the police will never let such situations worsen until they disrupt public order and safety.
"We have the situation under control and we will work hard to ensure the culprits are brought to justice.
"I still have faith in the capabilities of all police officers and personnel, especially from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in tracking down and taking action against individuals or those involved in organised crime," he said.
On Wednesday, a 40-year-old man was gunned down as he was having lunch at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Baru.
On Thursday, four individuals were injured after they were attacked by a group of masked men, armed with machetes at a restaurant in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.
