Pulau Sibuan remains closed with suspected WWII bomb still in area

KOTA KINABALU: A suspected World War II bomb found in waters off Pulau Sibuan in Semporna has yet to be detonated.

Sabah Parks director Dr Maklarin Lakim said the site remains closed to visitors as police and security forces have yet to give the clearance to reopen the island.

He said police were still waiting for bomb disposal experts from the peninsula.

On Wednesday (Jan 8), Semporna MP Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal called for the swift defusing of the suspected bomb as Sibuan is a popular destination for tourists and divers.

He said it is important to reopen the island as prolonged closure would impact tourism and the local economy, more so with the country gearing up for Visit Malaysia 2026.
