KOTA KINABALU: A 25-year-old motorcyclist and a 43-year-old pedestrian were killed when both men were involved in an accident near Alam Mesra here on Thursday (Jan 9) night.
The Fire and Rescue Department said a 23-year-old man who was the pillion rider suffered injuries.
The Department received an emergency call at 8.44pm regarding the fatal incident, and a team from Lintas fire station were dispatched to the location where the police and health officers were also present.
“According to the report, the motorcycle hit the pedestrian, where the two men were pronounced dead on site and the bodies were handed over to the police.
“The injured passenger meanwhile received early treatment by the emergency responders before being sent to the district hospital for further treatment.
“The operation ended at 11.48pm,” said the Department spokesman in a statement here on Friday (Jan 10).
Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Kasim Muda said the motorcyclist could not brake it time and crashed into the pedestrian.
“The impact of the crash caused both motorcyclist and the pillion rider to be thrown off their motorcycle, while the pedestrian was hit,” he said in a statement.
The motorcyclist and pedestrian sustained serious injuries, to which they succumbed to, not long after, he said.
ACP Kasim said the pedestrian was believed on his way to his rented home at Kg Penampang Laut just across the road and did not want to use the overhead bridge provided.
“Medical officials pronounced the motorcyclist and pedestrian dead at the scene while the injured man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment,” he said.
He said the case is being investigated under the Road Transports Act 1987.
He urged road users to abide strictly by road regulations and to use proper crossing measures that are provided to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile in a separate incident in Ranau district, firefighters rescued a family of four trapped due to rising water at Kampung Sedul 1 on Thursday night.
The Department received the distress call at 9.35pm, alerting that the family – a man, a woman, a boy and a girl – requested help to be evacuated.
“The Ranau fire station sent five personnel who assisted the victims to cross the overflowed river using ropes and safety jackets, where they were then sent to their relatives’ home.
“After ensuring no more risks, the operation ended at 11.22pm,” the spokesman added.
