Floods: Over 1,500 victims housed at 24 relief centres in Johor

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has reached more than 1,500 people and is expected to continue rising due to the ongoing rainfall.

The Johor disaster management committee said that as of 4pm on Saturday (Jan 11), there are 1,597 people from 489 families currently being sheltered at 24 temporary relief centres in four flood-affected districts.

“The affected districts are Kota Tinggi with 1,086 victims, Kluang with 200 victims, Kulai with 177 victims, and Pontian with 134 victims.

“The PPS with the highest number of victims is at SK Laksamana with 205 people from Taman Aman and Taman Mawai, Kota Tinggi,” it said in a statement.

Five rivers are also recording a dangerous level reading, namely Sungai Endau near Kampung Contoh, Sungai Johor near Kampung Sungai Siam, Sungai Johor near Kampung Murni Jaya, Sungai Skudai near Kampung Laut, and Sungai Skudai near Kampung Pasir.

There are also four roads that have been closed off for all vehicles after being flooded, namely Jalan Lok Heng-Mawai, Jalan Mawai Lama, Jalan Johor Baru-Endau, and Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang.
