GEORGE TOWN: The highly anticipated Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is taking shape with the groundbreaking ceremony at Bandar Sri Pinang here on Saturday (Jan 11).
Officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the ceremony marked the commencement of a transformative new chapter for the state’s public transport network.
Anwar in his officiating speech said that the transformative impact of the LRT Mutiara Line could be a catalyst for economic growth, social prosperity and national unity.
"The project will set a new standard for infrastructure in Malaysia and underscore its potential to stimulate high-value investments, foster new industries, and bring economic benefits to Penang and the northern corridor as a whole," he said.
The LRT Mutiara Line project will span a total of 29.5km, with 21 strategically located stations, including a provisional station at Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A).
The alignment begins at PSR-A with two lines, extending from PSR-A to Komtar and the other from PSR-A to Penang Sentral – will work in unison, with trains running alternately, ensuring smooth, efficient transportation for all commuters.
With this dual headway alignment, commuters will enjoy seamless travel from the Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral for interchange with the ETS & Komuter train service or direct journey to Komtar, the central interchange hub for future metro rail.
Scheduled to begin operations in December 2031, the LRT Mutiara Line project will create thousands of job opportunities, attract substantial investments, and greatly enhance the quality of life for the people of Penang.
The project is also poised to strengthen regional connectivity, enhance mobility, and support Penang's economic growth for decades to come.
