Company executive in Sibu loses over RM100,000 to online investment scam

SIBU: An executive of a private company lost RM108,401.50 after falling victim to an online investment scam.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the case was reported to the Commercial Crime Investigation Division on Jan 11.

“The victim in her 30s, received a WhatsApp message in October 2024 from an individual identified as Chen Hao. The suspect promoted a supposed JP Morgan investment scheme that claimed to offer high returns,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 12).

The suspect provided details about the "investment" and instructed the victim to transfer funds in stages to nine different local bank accounts to secure the promised profits.

“The victim made a total of 26 transactions amounting to RM108,401.50. However, after completing all payments, she discovered that her calls were blocked, and no returns were received as promised,” ACP Zulkipli explained.

An investigation has been initiated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

ACP Zulkipli urged the public to exercise caution with investment offers that guarantee high returns.
