SHAH ALAM: The iconic Elmina Lakeside Mall (ELM) in Shah Alam has a lower carbon footprint thanks to its open design concept, says Sime Darby Property group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azmir Merican.

The design minimises the use of air-conditioning, reducing energy consumption and contributing to sustainability efforts, he said.

Additionally, ELM incorporates bicycle paths, planned solar panel installations and 16 electric vehicle charging stations to promote environmentally-friendly practices, he added.

Sime Darby Property previously said ELM’s open-concept design integrates lush greenery and natural light, harmonising indoor and outdoor spaces.

Azmir also said that ELM, which is Sime Darby Property’s second fully-owned mall, has achieved a 99% occupancy rate.

“ELM exceeded our expectations from the outset, achieving an impressive 99% occupancy rate and attracting significant footfall, with over 180,000 visitors during the opening week and a sustained monthly average of 640,000,” said Azmir at the launch of ELM and the Elmina Outdoor Sculpture Museum (EOSM) here yesterday.

He said the launch aligns with the group’s commitment to sustainable urban development and long-term value creation for stakeholders.

Spanning over 18,580sqm of net lettable area across 6.96ha, ELM – which has been operating since August 2024 – generates average sales of about RM20mil per month, he said.

To date, the mall has 96 tenants, with a combination of 35% being food and beverage tenants and the remainder categorised as general retail.

Complementing the mall, EOSM serves as a dedicated space to showcase contemporary Malaysian artists and will soon expand to include regional and international talent.

“We believe that this initiative will elevate the City of Elmina beyond a residential and commercial centre and into a destination for arts and culture.

“Beyond creating a space for communities and celebrating art, EOSM will also serve as a platform for corporates and partners to commission artists and have their sculptures showcased here,” Azmir said.

ELM and EOSM was launched by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Also present were Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

With a total gross development value of RM28bil, the City of Elmina spans 2,630ha and integrates residential, commercial and industrial developments.

To date, the township has completed about 12,800 residential homes and has over 67,000 residents. It is expected to accommodate a population of 150,000 upon completion.

The township is also home to Elmina Rainforest Knowledge Centre, Elmina Business Park and Malaysia’s longest jogging and cycling track, spanning 90km.

“These additions further position the City of Elmina as a leading township in Malaysia, driving economic activity, fostering community connections and enhancing urban living,” said Azmir.
