Kota Kinabalu cops hand out essential school items to underprivileged kids

KOTA KINABALU: Other than keeping the community safe, police in the city are also handing out assistance to the underprivileged.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Kasim Muda said his team worked together with NGOs to hand out back-to-school essentials to a total of 89 needy students from SK Natai in Telipok and SK Poring-Poring, Inanam on Monday (Jan 13).

“Both these schools are situated far out from the city and are built on high grounds, so it is quite difficult to reach them,” he said after the ‘Masih ada Yang Sayang’ (there are still those who care) programme.

The pupils received stationary and other back-to-school materials and food which would make their new school term more comfortable and fun, he said.

Apart from that, 10 underprivileged families also received foodstuffs such as rice, sugar, cooking oil and milk, said ACP Kasim.

“We hope to lessen the burdens of needy families and encourage pupils to go to school and reach their full potential academically,” he said.

“We are also hoping to foster better relations with the community so that agencies such as security forces, schools and the public can work together as an entity,” he added.

ACP Kasim said such programmes help involved parties to understand each other’s roles in the community while understanding issues faced in society.

He said the relations between police and the community go beyond law enforcement but also instil humanity and love among the community.
