MELAKA: The Historic City has intensified efforts to reduce congestion and improve traffic management through the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, says Datuk Rais Yasin.

The Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management committee chairman said the AI-powered traffic light systems aim to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of transportation in the city centre.

A total of 33 traffic light intersections within the jurisdiction of the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) have been equipped with AI technology since 2021.

"We have spent RM5mil to upgrade the traffic lights from standard digital technology to AI technology to analyse and optimise traffic flow," he said.

Rais said this after presenting trophies and prizes to the winners of the junior Melaka Hockey League Championship at Tun Fatimah Stadium in Serindit on Sunday (Jan 12).

MBMB Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman was also present during the event.

Rais said that among the intersections using AI technology are those at Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Jalan Panglima Awang, and the Ayer Keroh Industrial Area.

The AI traffic control system will significantly enhance travel times and ensure a safer road environment for all users.

"It can dynamically adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic data collected from camera sensors, ensuring better traffic flow and reducing delays, leading to smoother commutes.

"One of the advanced features of this AI technology is its ability to detect the number of vehicles from all directions, covering a 360-degree view," he said.

He added that the traffic lights would switch to green or red based on the number of vehicles coming from specific directions.

Rais, a senior Melaka executive councillor, said the state government plans to expand the use of similar technology to Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ), Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG), and Jasin Municipal Council (MPJ) in the future.

However, he said the expansion must be implemented gradually due to the high costs involved.
