GEORGE TOWN: Dozens of motorcyclists suspected of performing “Superman” stunts and speeding on the second Penang bridge have been rounded up in an operation.
Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said they were among 120 riders inspected in Ops Samseng Jalanan conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division in the wee hours yesterday.
He said some riders were performing dangerous stunts by lying straight on the seats in a Superman-like flying position, while others were racing against each other.
“We seized 60 motorcycles which were found to have expired road tax, no insurance coverage and illegal modifications, among others.
“One motorcycle was also found bearing a fake registration number and many riders did not have a licence,” ACP Sazalee told a press conference at the Bayan Lepas Police Station here.
He added that 170 summonses were issued for various offences during the operation.
While warning the public to stay away from illegal racing, he said such activities had become a prevalent problem, particularly among teenagers.
“They are the future of our country. Parents need to pay close attention to their children and monitor their movements to make sure they do not join groups that race illegally and perform dangerous stunts.
“They need to be taught to value their lives and not endanger other road users,” he added.
In another operation on Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway near Bayan Lepas Industrial Estate, police detained eight motorcyclists, aged between 15 and 30, suspected of being involved in illegal racing.
ACP Sazalee said the group’s motorcycles had also been seized.
He said the group was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020) for reckless driving.
He said those caught for illegal racing could lose their driving licence for up to five years. For subsequent offences, they could be punished with a jail term of no less than 10 years and a fine between RM10,000 and RM20,000, as well as losing their licence for up to 10 years if convicted.
