M-cyclists urged to get free checks, new helmets at road safety campaign on Jan 14

KUALA LUMPUR: With road deaths involving motorcyclists at an alarming level, Malaysians are encouraged to take advantage of free inspections for their motorcycles and the crash helmet exchange, among others, at the 2025 Road Safety Campaign here.

Currently being held at Dataran Ilmu in Bandar Baru Selayang until 5pm on Tuesday (Jan 14), the one-day programme includes a free 16-point motorcycle inspection by Suzuki Malaysia mechanics.

Motorcyclists may also exchange their old helmets for new ones for free, while free helmets will be given to children to promote road safety for young passengers.

New motorcycle models will be on display, as well as important safety accessories for riders to enhance their well-being when travelling home for Chinese New Year.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the event is a key initiative by private companies and non-governmental organisations to educate the public on road safety, as road fatalities involving motorcycles have reached alarming levels.

He said a total of 5,939 deaths were recorded out of 585,729 accidents reported as of November last year, of which almost 70% involved motorcyclists.

“A staggering 67% or 4,014 fatalities involved motorcyclists and pillion riders, with the majority being youths aged 16 to 35.

“This means the group has become the largest contributor to road accident deaths, which is why programmes by private companies and NGOs like this are so important.

“This doesn't just showcase corporate responsibility but also their desire to provide benefits to the people,” he said in his opening speech on Tuesday (Jan 14).

He encouraged other companies to also hold similar road safety campaigns during festive seasons to help reduce the number of accidents on our roads.

He also called on vehicle industry players and parents to play their respective part in spreading road safety awareness.

“Industry players must always ensure that their products meet all necessary safety standards before selling them.

“Parents and family members too must play their role to remind their loved ones and youngsters on the importance of vehicle maintenance and road safety from as young an age as possible.

“Any loss of a life is not just a tragedy for their loved ones but also a loss for the country’s future,” he added.

Themed “Share the Road, Ride with Courtesy”, the programme was organised jointly by the Malaysia Motorcycle and Scooter Dealer Association (MMSDA) and Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Jeffrey Lim and association vice president Yap Kiew San.
