PATTANI: A Malaysian man and six volunteer defence personnel were injured in a bomb explosion near the Mueang Pattani district police station in Pattani province, southern Thailand.
The incident occurred at around 8am yesterday after a police parade at the station, said Mueang Pattani police chief Col Jeffery Sulaiman.
“Initial investigations revealed that the bomb was believed to have been attached to a motorcycle parked near the police station and was likely detonated remotely using a timer,” he told reporters at the scene, Bernama reported.
He said the 20-year-old Malaysian from Kuala Lumpur sustained injuries from shattered glass caused by the blast.
Jeffery said the man was inside a car waiting for his wife, who was filing a report about missing travel documents at the police station when the blast occurred.
“The victim’s car was only about 10m from the explosion site, causing the vehicle’s windows to shatter from the impact,” he added.
All the victims were taken to Pattani Hospital for treatment.
It has been confirmed by authorities that the Malaysian tourist is safe and receiving treatment.
He experienced chest pain, likely caused by the blast’s impact, but sustained no visible wounds.
“Police are investigating to track down the perpetrators,” Jeffery added.
