KUALA LUMPUR: The police have confirmed that the Home Minister's son has been married since last September and that the marriage took place in southern Thailand.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the marriage certificate was legitimate based on checks conducted by investigators.
"The Home Minister's son and a woman were in love, but they faced obstacles in getting married. They hid their marriage in September last year, so much so that even their friends did not know.
"They did not want the issue to be blown out of proportion to avoid hurting their family members' feelings," added Razarudin on Tuesday (Jan 14).
He was speaking at a press conference after attending a ceremony honouring police officers and personnel.
The IGP said the investigation has been completed and the investigation paper has been referred to the deputy public prosecutor in Penang.
"We are still waiting for further instructions on the matter," he said.
It was reported that the police have already completed the investigation on a criminal intimidation case involving the son of a minister.
The case has since gone viral on social media.
Razarudin said the investigation paper was referred to the deputy public prosecutor on Monday (Jan 6) for further action based on current laws.
"We do not compromise in taking action nor do we protect any parties who have committed an offence. We have also recorded the statements of all those involved in the case," he said.
The investigation paper has been referred to the deputy public prosecutor, he added.
"The report was made on Jan 1 and we have investigated the matter.
"For now, the prosecution has instructed the investigating officer to obtain a pregnancy report of a woman who claimed to have been threatened by the minister's son," he said.
The IGP said initial investigations revealed that the minister's son has already married the woman, who was said to have been pregnant since September last year.
"We are waiting for confirmation of the marriage certificate. I stress that the police have never protected anyone who has committed an offence, even though it involved a minister or their family members," he said.
The police investigation is transparent and the police will ensure the culprit is brought to justice, he added.
An incident went viral on Telegram involving a minister's son who allegedly threatened a woman who wanted him to be responsible for getting her pregnant seven weeks ago.
The threat reportedly occurred when the minister's son was discussing with the woman and other witnesses at a house in Telok Air Tawar, Butterworth, Penang on Dec 24.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
