KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Cabinet on Tuesday (Jan 14) took the opportunity to extend their Pongal greetings to the Tamil community in the country.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said Pongal symbolises gratitude for the harvest, family unity, harmony and togetherness. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of appreciating nature's blessings and the tireless efforts of farmers who form the backbone of the nation.
"May this Pongal celebration bring joy, abundant blessings and strengthen bonds among us all, regardless of race or religion.
"Malaysia is a country rich in cultural diversity, and this harmony is our greatest strength. Let us continue to uphold and promote unity for a brighter future.
"Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum. May this new year bring hope and new opportunities for everyone,” he said in a Facebook post.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also wished a Happy Pongal to all Hindus in Malaysia celebrating the festival on Tuesday.
"May this year’s celebration be more joyous, bringing happiness to those celebrating in the harmonious multiracial and multicultural environment of Malaysia,” she said in a Facebook post.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing also extended Pongal greetings to the Tamil community, praying for a prosperous and peaceful life for all.
"This Pongal festival is also a symbol of unity in our country, which is rich in cultural heritage and diversity. May this new chapter strengthen our unity and harmony,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said diversity remains Malaysia’s most valuable asset and wished the Tamil community a Happy New Year and a joyful Pongal celebration.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, in a Facebook post, said Pongal is a meaningful occasion, particularly for Tamils who celebrate the new year as well as the blessings of an abundant harvest.
"My family, my team at the Health Ministry, the Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament Service Centre, and Parti Amanah Negara wish a Happy New Year and Thaipongal Day to all those celebrating, whether in Malaysia or around the world,” he said.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh also extended her Pongal greetings in a poster shared on Facebook on Tuesday.
Pongal is a Hindu harvest festival celebrated by Tamils around the world, including Malaysia. This celebration signifies gratitude to the sun (Surya) and earth (Bhoomi) gods for a bountiful harvest and prosperity.- Bernama
