New bill to enforce community service for serial litterbugs to be tabled in March, says Nga

PETALING JAYA: A draft Bill to introduce community service penalties for individuals found guilty of littering offences will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in March, says Nga Kor Ming.

The Housing and Local Government Minister said this was an effort to increase civic awareness among the public to ensure responsibility for cleanliness in their area.

"Increasing the fine to RM300 or RM500 is ineffective because they can just pay it. Try sweeping rubbish for five hours, and they surely won't litter again.

"The community service law is imposed on those who are truly stubborn. These individuals will be invited to wear special uniforms to help local authority (PBT) workers clean drains, toilets, and sweep streets.

"However, the penalty will depend on the court according to the legal provisions later," he said to reporters after launching new machinery for the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) here on Monday (Jan 13).

He also said a total of 2,634 illegal landfills were closed in 2024.

"The closure of the landfills were implemented after the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SwCorp) in seven states used the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Act of 2007.
