KOTA KINABALU: With heavy rain forecasted and the threat of floods looming, firefighters in Sabah are expected to remain on high alert in the coming days to ensure public safety and mitigate the potential impacts of flooding across the state.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department director Zainal Madasin identified at least 799 flood-prone areas across the state, including villages, towns, and urban locations in districts such as Penampang, Sipitang, Tenom, and Beaufort.
Zainal stressed that the department’s priority was to ensure public safety during floods.
“We are fully prepared, with the necessary personnel and logistics, to respond to the second wave of the northeast monsoon,” he said during a recent working visit to Keningau.
To bolster their efforts, the department has partnered with strategic collaborators and deployed volunteer firefighter teams and auxiliary firefighter teams across various districts.
The heightened readiness comes as continuous rain and thunderstorms continue to affect both Sabah and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecasted ongoing rain for the west coast, including Ranau, Kota Belud, Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran, and Sandakan), and Kudat, until Friday (Jan 17).
Additionally, Zainal urged the public to stay vigilant, particularly during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, to prevent accidents such as fires.
“Ensure your home is safe by turning off electrical appliances and gas stoves after use,” he advised.
