PETALING JAYA: A total of 3,682 illegal websites that offered pirated content such as popular films and music had been blocked from 2021 to November 2024, says Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said this was carried out by the ministry in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Internet service providers (ISPs).
“This is part of the ministry’s commitment to protect local creative works from being exploited illegally,” he told a press conference after attending an engagement session on digital intellectual property protection at MyIPO Tower yesterday.
Armizan said to intensify efforts in protecting creative works, the ministry also introduced the Cyber Copyright Enforcement Programme (CyCORE), which involves collaboration with MCMC, ISPs and copyright holders.
He said the ministry is committed to eliminating the widespread distribution of digital piracy through the programme.
“The ministry will continue to strengthen cooperation with various agencies involved in efforts to address digital piracy issues,” Armizan said, Bernama reported.
He added that collaboration from industry stakeholders is essential to ensure these efforts are implemented.
Armizan said 69,442 voluntary copyright notifications had been filed with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) from 2012 to last year.
This includes creative works such as literature, arts, music, films and sound recordings.
