Hasbi: Over 4,000 road fatalities involved m-cyclists in 2024


KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 70% or over 4,000 road fatalities in Malaysia last year involved motorcyclists aged between 16 and 35, says Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.

He said a total of 5,939 fatalities were recorded out of 585,729 accidents reported as of November 2024, of which almost 70% involved motorcyclists.

“A staggering 67% or 4,014 fatalities involved motorcyclists and pillion riders, with the majority being youths aged 16 to 35.

“This means the group has worryingly become the largest contributor to road accident deaths in the country,” he said in his opening speech at Suzuki Malaysia’s 2025 Road Safety Campaign here yesterday.

Hasbi praised Suzuki’s campaign as a key initiative by private companies and non-government organisations to help educate the public on road safety as fatalities reached alarming levels.

Held at Dataran Ilmu Bandar Baru Selayang from 9am to 5pm, the one-day programme included a free 16-point check motorcycle inspection by Suzuki Malaysia’s skilled mechanics.

A free helmet exchange programme and giveaway of children’s helmets were also held to promote the safety of young passengers among Malaysians.

There were also various exhibitions that showcased new motorcycle models and key safety accessories riders should consider getting to improve their safety during their ride home this festive season.

“This doesn’t just showcase their corporate responsibility but also their desire to provide social benefits to the people. I hope other private companies follow this example to educate the public on road safety,” he added.

He also called on vehicle industry players and parents to play their respective parts in ensuring road safety among the people.

“Industry players must always ensure that their products meet all the necessary safety standards before selling them to the public.

“Parents and family members must also play their role to remind their loved ones and youths of the importance of vehicle maintenance and road safety from a young age. Any loss of a life is not just a tragic loss for their loved ones but also a loss for the country’s future,” he added.

Themed “Share the Road, Ride with Courtesy”, the programme was organised jointly by the Malaysia Motorcycle and Scooter Dealer Association (MMSDA) and Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The event was also attended by Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Jeffrey Lim and MMSDA vice-president Yap Kiew San.
