KOTA KINABALU: High Non-Revenue Water (NRW) rates and undetected pipe bursts are being blamed for the low water pressure affecting consumers in Putatan and Penampang in recent months.
Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya (pic) said ongoing water and pressure balancing efforts in Sabah’s southwest coast have also led to water disruptions, resulting in rationing in most parts of Penampang.
He said this comes after a discussion with the Water Department to hear their explanation on efforts to address water supply issues in Kota Kinabalu, Putatan, Penampang and nearby areas.
"The main reasons for low water pressure are, first, a still-high NRW level. Second, pipe bursts, which are often detected only after complaints are lodged,” said Shahelmey.
"Third, the Water Department is carrying out water and pressure balancing in southwest areas, which has caused temporary disruptions. However, I am relieved to be informed that the situation has improved as of Tuesday (Jan 14) morning,” he said.
Thousands of residents in 15 villages across Penampang have been affected by water rationing that began on Monday (Jan 13).
Shahelmey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister III, made these comments after inspecting ongoing works at the Kasigui Urgent Water Supply Scheme (UWSS) plant in Penampang.
The project, which began in May 2024, is expected to be completed by May 2025 and will provide an additional five million litres of water per day (mld).
“There were some technical issues, but solutions have been identified. Work is continuing, and we expect the project to be completed by May,” he said.
The additional water from the UWSS plant is expected to help alleviate water disruption issues in affected areas.
He added that the Water Department had been directed to remain on high alert and continuously monitor the situation, particularly during festive and holiday seasons when water demand is higher.
