KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed the authenticity of a marriage certificate which showed that the son of a Cabinet minister had married the woman linked to him in a criminal intimidation case.
The marriage certificate showed that he was married in southern Thailand since September last year, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
He said the document was legitimate based on checks conducted by investigators.
“The minister’s son and woman were in love but they faced obstacles in getting married.
“They had concealed their marriage so much so that even their friends did not know about it.
“They did not want the issue to be blown out of proportion to avoid hurting the feelings of their family members,” he told a press conference yesterday after attending a ceremony honouring celebrated police officers and personnel.
The case made headlines after social media posts emerged, claiming that a Cabinet minister’s son had threatened a woman who accused him of being responsible for her pregnancy.
Their exchange is said to have happened during a discussion with the woman and several others at a house in Butterworth, Penang, on Dec 24 last year.
A police report was lodged on Jan 1 and authorities are said to be seeking a pregnancy report from the complainant.
It was later revealed that the minister’s son is married to the woman.
On Jan 11, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that no one, including his son, is above the law.
“If a report has been made against him, it is the responsibility of the police to investigate the case transparently and fairly,” he was quoted as saying.
Yesterday, the IGP said the investigation had been completed and the investigation paper was forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor in Penang.
“We are waiting for further instructions on the matter,” he said.
