MUAR: A 35-year-old man lost more than RM130,000 after falling victim to an online love scam, here.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said that the victim, who works as a factory technician, shared that it all started when he became acquainted with an individual believed to be a woman through a social media platform in May 2024.
“Communication continued via the WeChat application, during which the individual shared her financial struggles, claiming she suffered from an illness requiring regular treatment.
“Trusting the individual’s story, the victim made multiple transactions to three different accounts, amounting to RM132,970 on June 4, 2024.
“When the individual requested additional financial assistance, the victim grew suspicious and ceased further communication, realising he had likely been deceived,” he said in a statement here on Wednesday (Jan 15).
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
ACP Raiz Mukhliz urges the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution, particularly in financial transactions.
They are advised to follow updates and guidance on official Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, managed by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, to stay informed about scammer tactics.
