Nearly RM7mil worth of contraband seized in two raids at Port Klang


BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department has confiscated alcoholic beverages and cigarettes worth nearly RM7mil in two separate raids at Port Klang.

Penang Customs director Rohaizad Ali said that the first raid was on Dec 12 last year during an inspection on a container located at North Port, Port Klang in Selangor.

"Inspection on the container found 52,790 beer cans equivalent to 26,395 litre of alcoholic drinks worth about RM264,000 with unpaid duties amounting to RM917,083," he told a press conference here on Wednesday (Jan 15).

Rohaizad said investigation also found that the imported beer were from an East Asian country and classified as Prohibited Import Goods and are subject to Item 3, Third Schedule, Part II of the Customs Order (Prohibition on Import) 2023.

He said the case is investigated under Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 74(1)(e) of the Excise Act 1976.

The second operation was done on Dec 26 last year, following inspection of a container located at North Port, Port Klang, in Selangor.

"During the raid, the team discovered 4.5 million cigarettes sticks estimated to be worth RM1,372,250 with unpaid duties amounting to RM 4,477,250. The contraband was hidden among 175 cartons containing bundled clothes," he said.

The case is investigated under Section Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967.

He said no arrests were made during both raids.
