27 migrants nabbed at transit home in Cheras

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 27 foreigners were detained following a raid at a transit home in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

The raid, codenamed Op Pintas, was conducted by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) division (D3) and the Kajang district police headquarters at about 9pm on Tuesday.

Bukit Aman CID D3 principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the raiding team detained 14 men and six women from Indonesia along with five men and two women from Myanmar.

“Among those detained were an Indonesian woman who was the transit home’s caretaker and two Indonesian men who were her assistants.

“The three caretakers were detained under Section 26A of the Atipsom Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act,” he said when contacted.

The migrants who were staying at the home, aged between 21 and 54, were detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, he said.

“The migrants were guarded and managed by the three Indonesian suspects. They were provided food and accommodation before they were either smuggled out of Malaysia or sent to designated work locations.”

The transit home was rented by the caretaker, SAC Soffian said.

“Each migrant is charged RM30 per day for lodging and food.

“Investigations showed that they paid between RM1,500 and RM3,200 to leave and enter Malaysia illegally,” he said.
