‘Lost water, burst pipes cause of supply woes’

KOTA KINABALU: High non-revenue water (NRW) rates and undetected pipe bursts are being blamed for the low water pressure affecting consumers in Putatan and Penampang over the past few months.

State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said ongoing water and pressure balancing efforts in Sabah’s southwest coast region have also contributed to disruptions, leading to rationing exercises in most parts of Penampang.

“I held a discussion with the Water Department to hear its explanation on efforts to address water supply issues in Kota Kinabalu, Putatan, Penampang and nearby areas.

“The main reasons for low water pressure are, first, a still-high NRW level.

“Second, pipe bursts, which are often detected only after complaints are lodged.

“Third, the Water Department is carrying out water and pressure balancing in southwest areas, which has caused temporary disruptions.

“However, I am relieved to be informed that the situation has improved as of Tuesday morning,” he said.

Thousands of residents in 15 villages across Penampang have been affected by water rationing that began on Monday.

Shahelmey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister III, made these comments after inspecting ongoing works at the Kasigui Urgent Water Supply Scheme (UWSS) plant in Penampang.

The project, which began in May last year, is expected to be completed by May this year and will provide an additional five million litres of water per day (mld).
