Keep window open if you nap in the car

PETALING JAYA: Taking a rest in the car during a long drive is a good habit as it can revitalise a driver.

However, napping in a vehicle should be done with precautions to avoid untoward incidents, say road safety experts.

Sleeping in a car with all windows closed and the engine running can be fatal with carbon monoxide building up inside, Universiti Putra Malaysia Engineering Faculty’s Road Safety Research Centre head Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua warns.

He said vehicle owners should always do a maintenance check to rule out any exhaust leakage that could cause fumes to enter the car cabin.

“Opening the windows even a bit is important as it allows the circulation of fresh air. It is vital to turn off the car and keep the windows slightly open when you stop for a rest anywhere,” he said.

Law said drivers should take a break from driving after every two to three hours, even if they do not feel tired as it will help in enhancing alertness on the road.

“Furthermore, make sure you walk around, grab a snack and drink water to avoid feeling sleepy,” he said.

Road Safety Marshal Club founder and president K. Balasupramaniam recommended drivers not to “reverse-park” at lay-bys when they want to take a nap.

“When the vehicle is parked in reverse, the gases from the exhaust system might hit the curb or wall, causing it to recirculate towards the car.

“It’s better to park the vehicle forward, with the exhaust facing open space so the gases can be blown away,” he said.
