
Red-y for the festivities: Lit up lanterns strung above Jonker Walk to usher in the Lunar New Year.
MELAKA: The iconic Jonker Walk is showcasing 2,025 lanterns in a dazzling Lunar New Year celebration.
Jonker Walk management committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said this was the highest number of lanterns being displayed in two decades for the Chinese New Year festivities.
Last year’s display had 1,000 lanterns.
“The vibrant lanterns, in various sizes and shapes, adorn not only Jonker Street but also its charming back alleys.
“The number of lanterns was chosen to align with the Year of the Wooden Snake, adding a meaningful touch to the celebration,” he said at the launch of the decorations on Saturday night.
The event was launched by Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong.
The Jonker Walk concept was hatched by then Melaka MCA chief Datuk Gan Boon Leong in 2000.
The night market was set up to assist local hawkers generate an income, before it turned out to be a popular tourist attraction.
