MELAKA: More than 300,000 vehicles are expected to enter the state during the Chinese New Year period, says Senior Asst Comm Datuk Md Nazri Zawawi.
The acting state police chief said the figure comprises 103,000 vehicles via the Simpang Ampat toll plaza, 172,000 vehicles through the Ayer Keroh toll plaza, and 43,000 vehicles via the Jasin toll plaza.
“The increase in vehicle volume is due to the festive holidays and the extended school break,” he told reporters after launching Ops Selamat 23 at the Ayer Keroh toll plaza yesterday.
SAC Md Nazri said 155 officers, including 17 senior officers, from the state traffic investigation and enforcement department will be deployed to traffic congestion hotspots and ‘black spots’ where accidents frequently occur.
Among the hotspots are Jalan Mufti Haji Khalil, Jalan Rembia-Kendong, and Jalan Gapam-Bemban.
He identified Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin, Jalan Sungai Udang-Lubok China and Jalan Merlimau-Jasin as among the ‘black spots’.
SAC Md Nazri said that during Ops Selamat, police would focus on six main offences that road users often commit: overtaking on double lanes, cutting queue, using mobile devices while driving, speeding, driving in the emergency lane, and disobeying traffic signals.
He said in Ops Selamat 21, held during Chinese New Year last year, a total of 399 accidents were recorded, involving five fatalities.
