Miri landslide: Man survives while four bodies recovered, says Sarawak Fire and Rescue Dept


KUCHING: Six individuals are feared to have been buried alive in a landslide that occurred in Kampung Lereng Bukit in Miri early Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said the incident was reported at 2.58am and involved two women, three girls and a boy.

"A man was rescued unharmed. As of 3.48am, efforts to retrieve the victims are still ongoing.

"The body of a teenage boy has been recovered," the spokesperson said.

The body of a 17-year-old boy was recovered from the site of a landslide in Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, Wednesday morning.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre, in its latest update, said the body was found at 6.17am among the debris of one of the two houses affected by the 2.58am incident.

Meanwhile, a second body has been found buried in the rubble and has yet to be identified after rescuers recovered the body from the landslide at 8.55am on Wednesday.

In an update, the third and fourth bodies have been found taking the total number of fatalities to four, so far.

"The third body was recovered at about 11.38am and the fourth body about 10 minutes later.

"Efforts to find another victim, a woman, are ongoing," said the Operations Centre.

The rescue operation involves 15 personnel and four vehicles from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station. - Bernama
