Number of flood victims continue to rise in Sabah and Sarawak


KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sabah and Sarawak has worsened, with the total number of evacuees housed at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in the two states rising to 11,886 people as of 8pm on Thursday (Jan 30).

IN SARAWAK, the number of evacuees rose to 7,503 people from 2,096 families compared to 6,718 people from 1,825 families this afternoon.

According to a report by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, the Bintulu district recorded the highest number of evacuees with 1,922 people from 471 families sheltering at six relief centres, followed by the Serian district with 1,882 evacuees from 593 families housed at 16 relief centres.

In Selangau, a total of 728 evacuees from 151 families are still sheltering at three relief centres, in Tatau there are 426 evacuees from 129 families at two relief centres and in Kuching, a total of 402 evacuees from 151 families are sheltering at three relief centres.

The secretariat also informed that four new relief centres have been activated, in Bintulu, Serian, Gedong and Selangau.

IN SABAH, the number of flood evacuees in the state continued to rise to 4,383 people from 1,475 families tonight compared to 3,929 people from 1,365 families in the evening.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said all the flood victims were housed at 34 relief centres in 10 districts with Kota Marudu being the district with the highest number of people at 2,355 people, followed by Telupid (413), Lahad Datu (360), Pitas (379), Kota Belud (297), Beluran (185), Sandakan (118), Paitan (120), Beufort (102) and Tongod (54). – Bernama
