Focus on national interest and ignore disruptive issues, says PM

IPOH: The country needs to stay focused on development and not get distracted by disruptive issues that certain parties raise in an attempt to become local heroes, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said there would always be groups trying to be "champions" in this multiracial, multireligious country but it was more important for the majority to continue prioritising the national interest.

“This country must serve as an example of strong unity among all races.

“We must consider everyone’s interests, ensure progress for all, and grow the economy for the benefit of all,” he said in his speech at the Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI) Chinese New Year open house at a hotel here on Friday (Jan 31).

Anwar thanked the PCCCI for sharing the spirit of developing the nation, adding that there was no need to stir up needless conflicts.

“There have been concerns raised about Malays celebrating Chinese New Year, Chinese celebrating Hari Raya, and people attending Thaipusam.

“These traditions have existed for decades without issues, but now some try to make them problems.

“Should we entertain these distractions, or should we focus on our unity? That is the choice we must make,” he said.

Anwar pointed out that China is a major economic power and good relations with it would benefit Malaysia's people and economy.

He said the country could not rely on investments from certain countries only, and as such it was important to maintain strong ties with China and the United States while improving relations with the European Union.

Anwar said this to address claims by certain quarters that government was "handing everything" to China.

"In the past, we had no issues when it was America or Europe.

“This is a colonial mentality. For us, it doesn’t matter who invests, whether it is China or any other country. We welcome investments, and... strengthen ties. That is our policy.

“We must not be trapped in outdated thinking, relying solely on one country, but maintain good relations with all nations.

“If another country has issues with China, that is their problem, not ours. In fact, during my meetings with President Xi Jinping, I was treated with great respect,” he added.

“The world is constantly changing. Just last week, artificial intelligence was said to be dominated by the United States.

“But three days ago, (we learned of) China's groundbreaking (DeepSeek) that stunned the world. Yesterday, Alibaba made another major announcement.

“This shows the strength of China’s innovation, and we should take advantage of these opportunities,” he added.
