Youngsters praised for assisting flood victims in Kinabatangan


KOTA KINABALU: A group of youngsters has been widely praised for their efforts in helping people in flood-hit areas of Kg. Paris 3 in Kinabatangan over the past few days.

Social media posts have shown these youths, primarily men, standing by a knee-high flooded road to guide vehicles and assist in pushing cars stuck in the water.

Their efforts, carried out with joy and sincerity despite the rain, have sparked gratitude and pride among those they helped.

Yosua Laing expressed appreciation after safely navigating a flooded road, thanking all involved in assisting vehicles during the flood.

Another user, @umie_8170, shared a video of people pushing a nearly submerged car in Kinabatangan, while another post highlighted men running to help a car that had tilted on a flooded road in Telupid.

One person expressed a desire to send gifts or money to those involved as a token of appreciation, asking netizens to tag them in shared pictures.

Others shared stories of public cooperation with rescue personnel to clear fallen branches in other districts.

VyVy Yen thanked the helpful people, mentioning they made the journey from Kunak to Kota Kinabalu smoother.

Many praised Sabahans as kind, helpful, and united, especially during emergencies and hardships, urging this unity to be preserved beyond political divides.

Separately, a missing person alert was circulated on social media featuring Kinabatangan MP, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

Kinabatangan and Telupid are among 10 districts seriously affected by floods that began earlier this week and continued through Friday (Jan 31).

According to the Sabah Civil Defence Department, 5,162 victims from 1,789 families remain in 34 relief centres statewide as of 4pm, Friday.

A total of 73 villages are affected, but water levels are improving in areas like Telupid, Sandakan, Kota Belud, Beluran, and Paitan.

Water levels in Beaufort, Kota Marudu, Tongod, Lahad Datu, and Pitas remain stagnant.

Sabah Electricity announced on its official Facebook Careline page that power restoration is being carried out in phases, with work only proceeding in safe, water-free areas.
