Teacher accused of screening inappropriate show to pupils

JOHOR BARU: Checks will be conducted into allegations that a teacher screened a thriller television series for Year One pupils, says state executive councillor Aznan Tamin.

The Johor education and information committee chairman, however, said the state education department has yet to receive any official complaints regarding the matter.

“There are standard operating procedures that schools must follow before screening any show to pupils. This includes obtaining approval from the Education Department.

“So far, no official complaints have been lodged regarding the allegation, but I will look into the matter,” he said when contacted.

Aznan said this when asked to comment on claims from a parent alleging that a teacher screened the South Korean drama series, Squid Game, known for its gruesome scenes, to Year One pupils.

In an e-mail, the parent, who wished to remain anonymous, alleged that the teacher had shown three episodes of the hit series to young pupils, calling it inappropriate.

“As a parent, I find it highly inappropriate for a teacher to screen such content in school, especially to seven-year-old Year One pupils.

“The drama is filled with violent action, fights and murder. It makes no sense for a teacher to show three episodes of such a show.

“When I watched it myself, I was shocked and stunned by the brutal scenes and killings. Humans were treated like rats, with no value and no law at all,” the parent wrote.

The e-mail was also addressed to several media outlets and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

The parent also questioned the SOP with regard to the screening of shows in school and the lessons pupils were expected to learn from the series.

“I hope the ministry will investigate the matter and ensure this does not happen again,” the parent said, claiming that the incident took place between December last year and January this year at a school in Skudai.

Meanwhile, checks with the police revealed that no reports had been lodged regarding the matter as of press time.
