Mother, daughter claim trial to stealing jewellery while cleaning client’s home


MELAKA: A mother and her undergrad daughter have claimed trial at the Magistrate's Court in Ayer Keroh here to three charges of stealing jewellery while providing house cleaning services.

Both accused, S. Wairavi, 46, and her daughter, C. Tharshini, 19, entered their pleas after the three charges were read out by the court interpreter before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin on Thursday (Feb 6).

Wairavi, who faces one charge, is accused of stealing a gold ring belonging to a 61-year-old male victim.

Tharshini faces two charges for stealing a gold choker necklace and a pair of gold earrings belonging to a 17-year-old female victim.

All offences were allegedly committed at a residence on Jalan Seri Mangga, Taman Seri Mangga Section 1, Melaka Tengah district between Dec 1 last year and Jan 13.

The charges were framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the two could face a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib proposed bail of RM15,000 for Wairavi and RM8,000 for each of the charges faced by Tharshini.

Both accused, who were unrepresented, pleaded for lower bail, citing that Wairavi is a single mother supporting four school-going children while Tharshini is a student at a private higher education institution.

The court set bail at RM10,000 for Wairavi and RM10,000 for both charges against Tharshini while fixing March 17 for next mention.
